Physiotherapy and hydrotherapy

There are a number of hospital physiotherapy and hydrotherapy services you can access in the Northern Territory (NT).

Physiotherapists are part of the multidisciplinary team within NT hospitals. They provide inpatient care and outpatient clinics.

Choose from the below hospitals.

The physiotherapy clinic offers the following outpatient clinics as face-to-face consult or using telehealth.

Adults

Services include:

  • musculoskeletal
  • orthopaedics
  • vestibular
  • GLAD program (for hip and knee osteoarthritis)
  • women’s health
  • therapy related to antenatal, postnatal and gynaecology surgery
  • postnatal
    • Diastasis of the Rectus Abdominus Muscle (DRAM) of greater than 5cm
    • perineal tear 3rd or 4th degree
  • other muscular indication
  • urinary incontinence
  • chronic pelvic pain
  • prostatectomy/male incontinence
  • oncology / gynaecology surgery
  • prolapse.

Paediatrics (<14 years old)

Services included:

  • TEDI clinic (premature babies only)
  • musculoskeletal
  • respiratory (bronchiectasis)
  • congenital conditions (DDH, clubfoot)
  • orthopaedic.

This team doesn't accept referrals for chronic conditions.

How to arrange a referral

Referrals are from health professionals only. GPs can refer by sending a letter by email.

Palmerston Hospital hydrotherapy service is mainly a group based service, however one-on-one sessions are available if required.

Sessions are provided to inpatients regularly during rehabilitation.

Classes are also provided for the following outpatients:

  • pre and post joint surgery
  • rehabilitation outpatients
  • pain service.

Referrals are to be sent by email. Health professionals or individuals can refer.

Your health professional will talk to you about your hydrotherapy goals and if this service is suitable for you.

The physiotherapist works in the allied health team to provide both inpatient and outpatient services.

They assist patients in meeting their full physical capabilities. The treatment is directed towards:

  • maintaining and restoring normal function
  • minimising dysfunction
  • preventing disability.

You can self-refer, or your health professional can for you.

The physiotherapy service is available to inpatients and some emergency department patients.

Outpatient services are provided for patients who have acute issues, or who need subacute and rehabilitation follow up.

The hospital physiotherapist has limited outpatient capacity.

The inpatient physiotherapy team provide a referral based service. They provide services on priority basis for inpatients across acute wards and rehabilitation.

The physiotherapy team provide outpatient physiotherapy for all ages, and offer the following services:

  • orthopaedics
  • respiratory
  • neurology
  • lymphoedema
  • pelvic health
  • rehabilitation.

Treatment is time limited and  focussed on achieving specific client goals.

How to arrange a referral

If you are currently in hospital, speak with your health professional.

For outpatients, referrals are accepted from:

  • hospital health professionals
  • GPs
  • community based health professionals
  • self referrals.
