Medical imaging
Medical imaging is used to create visual images of the body's internal structures.
These images can help doctors diagnose and treat medical conditions.
In the Northern Territory (NT) services can include:
- radiography - X-ray
- CT scans
- mammography
- ultrasound
- MRI scans
- PET/CT imaging
- nuclear medicine imaging.
How to access the service
Medical imaging at NT hospitals are for inpatients and outpatients of the hospital.
You may need to have medical imaging at a hospital when:
- visiting the emergency department
- staying in hospital
- you're pregnant
- you need to see an NT health specialist or part of your treatment or care plan.
GP's and other health professionals can only refer you to a private medical imaging service.
Make an appointment
Your medical imaging appointment may be arranged by either a healthcare professional from NT Health, or you will receive a form to make a medical imaging appointment.
If you have the form, you can use the contact information on it to schedule your appointment.

Royal Darwin Hospital Medical Imaging Department offers:
- X-ray
- CT
- MRI
- Fluoroscopy
- Interventional Procedures
- Ultrasound
- Nuclear Medicine
- PET services
- Mobile x-ray service to all wards
- Operating theatre imaging
Outpatient and outreach service offers:
- sonography service to remote community clinics across the western Top End, Tiwi Islands and West Arnhem region.
- x-ray service screening clinics at remote community health centres.
- sonography service to the obstetric outpatient clinic at RDH, 8th floor.
- x-ray and ultrasound fortnightly at Holtz Correction Centre
- radiographers provide the imaging service for the Cardiac Cath Lab in Darwin Private Hospital.

Alice Springs Hospital is a private and public imaging department, working in partnership with Jones Radiology based out of Adelaide.
It has the following medical imaging services:
- computed tomography including CT angiography
- magnetic resonance imaging
- ultrasound
- general X-ray and fluoroscopy
- digital subtraction angiography
- bone densitometry
- mammography
- interventional radiology services.

You may need to travel to Darwin for certain specialised x-rays and ultrasounds.
