Rum Jungle rehabilitation plan

The proposed rehabilitation plan, outlined in detail in the draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), aims to:

  • remediate existing sources of acid and metalliferous drainage contamination
  • interrupt other contaminant source–pathway–receptor linkages.

It also aims to address, as far as achievable, the physical aspects of the site that require remediation, namely the:

  • flow path of the East Branch of the Finniss River
  • quality of fluvial landscapes.

While the primary objective of this project is to restore the environmental condition onsite and downstream of the mine, the secondary objective is to create stable landforms to support future land use.

Environmental impact statement

Assessment of the draft EIS and supplementary reports was completed by the Northern Territory Environmental Protection Authority (NTEPA) in February 2023.

Project documentation provided as part of the environmental assessment can be viewed below.

The below are the appendices and supporting documentation.

After the EIS assessment was complete the Rum Jungle rehabilitation project received the following approvals:

The Rum Jungle funding agreement requires the Rum Jungle rehabilitation project to comply with both sets of approvals.

Annual compliance report

Both the NT and Australian Government environmental approvals require annual compliance reporting.

Due to overlaps between the 2 approvals, a single annual compliance report is prepared by an independent auditor.

Annual monitoring report

The NT environmental approval requires preparation of an annual environmental monitoring report.

Each report covers the period from the start of April through to the end of March of the following year.

The nature of the information presented in the reports will change as project activities progress.
