Register an imported vehicle

Introduction

To register an imported vehicle in the NT you need the following:

  • a vehicle import approval issued by the Federal Government
  • steering conversion modifications (if required)
  • engineering certification where required.
  • NT roadworthy inspection
  • proof of residency.

Interstate transfer of NT imported vehicle registration

Imported vehicles accepted for registration in the NT may not necessarily be acceptable in other jurisdictions – eg: left hand drive.

Selling an imported vehicle

If a vehicle has met the requirements for import approval and initial registration, there is no restriction preventing the sale of that imported vehicle unless conditions have been applied to the vehicle import approval (VIA).

It is an offence to sell an imported vehicle for use on a public road if it does not meet the Australian Design Rules or is not fitted with an identification plate, used import plate or personal import plate.
