Apply, renew or upgrade a water drilling licence

This guide has information on how to apply, renew or upgrade your water drilling licence in the Northern Territory (NT).

A water drilling licence is valid for five years.

To transfer a water drilling licence from another state or territory in Australia, contact the Katherine Water Resources office for advice and information on the application process.

Apply for a new licence

To get a water bore drilling licence you must have skills and knowledge that meet standards set by Water Resources. This is to make sure Northern Territory groundwater resources are protected.

You must follow these steps before you apply for a water drilling licence:

You need the right qualifications, skills and experience as set out for the class and endorsements you are applying for.

To support your application you can supply referee reports and course certificates.

Step 2. Complete the exams

You must have completed Module A and Module B exams.

The Module A exam is given by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). It is a competency based exam that looks at your understanding of the Water Act and Regulations.

You must submit the completed exam within 30 days of receipt.

You must successfully complete the exam with a pass mark of 80 percent or higher.

The Module B exam is given by the Australian Drilling Industry Training Committee. This exam is based on the class and endorsements from the minimum construction requirements for water bores in Australia.

Assessment of application

Once you have completed Module A and B exams your application will be assessed by DENR.

DENR will advise you of the success or otherwise of your application.

Renew your licence

Drillers licensed in the NT wanting to operate outside the Territory will need a separate licence from that state or territory.

To renew your NT water bore drilling licence you must follow these steps:

Send your application to your local Water Resources office no later than one month before the expiry date of the licence.

Upgrade your licence

To upgrade your water bore drilling licence you must follow these steps:

Submit your application to your local Water Resources office.

Step 3. Complete the exam

Complete the Module B exam for the upgraded class and/or endorsements you are seeking. The Module B exam is given by the Australian Drilling Industry Training Committee.

When you pass the Module B exam your application will be either:

  • forwarded to the Drillers Qualification Advisory Committee
  • or the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) will approve your licence.
