Register as a water driller under the AMR scheme

Water bore drillers who hold a licence in all states, except Queensland, can apply to work in the Northern Territory (NT).

You can do this through the automatic mutual recognition (AMR) scheme.

This means that you will be able to carry out activities in the NT that are covered by your licence from another state.

Who can apply

To be eligible, you must:

  • hold a valid and current licence in another state or territory who is also participating in the AMR scheme
    • a temporary registration in another state is not valid for AMR in the NT
  • meet the requirements of section 42D of the Mutual Recognition Act 1992 (Cth)
  • submit a notification of intent to work in the NT.

If you don't meet the requirements above, you will need to apply for an NT licence.

If you're a holder of a Queensland water driller licence, you must apply to convert your interstate licence to work in the NT.

If you have a water driller licence of any class from New South Wales, it is considered the same as an NT class 1 driller licence. This means you can only operate on single non-flowing aquifer systems.

Working under the AMR scheme

Once your notification is registered, you may work in the NT until your licence expiry date, unless your licence is suspended or cancelled.

If you upgrade or renew

If your interstate licence is:

  • upgraded - you must submit an updated copy of your licence
  • renewed - you must submit a new notification, with supporting documents.

If the NT cancels or suspends your AMR, this may be reflected on the public register.

You will be notified of this outcome and your rights to review.

Change of primary place of residence to the NT

If you plan to change your primary place of residence to the NT, you will need to apply for an NT licence.
