Oversize or overmass vehicles
Exemptions - oversize and overmass
New OSOM notices
From Thursday 3 April 2025, oversize and overmass (OSOM) notices will be introduced.
These notices will promote OSOM cross border access by allowing eligible vehicles to:
- travel at night
- have OS access during peak times
- no longer require a 3-year permit.
Eligible vehicles are those that meet dimension and vehicle type requirement, as per the notices.
For more information, call the permits officer on 08 8951 5263.
The Northern Territory (NT) now uses oversize and overmass (OSOM) notices instead of 3-year permits. These notices will:
- increase productivity and efficiency in the heavy vehicle industry
- reduce duplicate regulations across NT borders
- lower compliance burdens for operators.
Key benefits include:
- allows some oversize vehicles access during peak times
- permits night travel for eligible vehicles
- reduces administrative requirements for operators.
If vehicles or loads exceed the limits specified in the notices, single trip permits are required. Read how to apply for a permit.
Responsibility
It is the drivers responsibility to:
- be fully aware of the terms, conditions, and restrictions specified in the notice
- ensure notices (digital or hardcopy) are available in the vehicle for inspections.
