Holding a flare demonstration

If you want to hold a flare demonstration or discharge flare signals and devices, you must give 10 days’ notice to the Marine Safety Branch.

This is to prevent flares being mistaken for genuine distress signals.

After you have been granted approval, the Marine Safety Branch will notify Australian Search and Rescue (AusSAR) and the relevant marine, aviation and Defence agencies.

How to notify

To notify the Marine Safety Branch that you intend to discharge flares, fill in the notification of flare demonstration form PDF (134.3 KB).

Submit the form by email, fax or post to:

Marine Safety Branch
GPO Box 2520
Darwin NT 0801
Fax: (08) 8924 7009

To contact the Marine Safety Branch call (08) 8924 7100.
