Electronic gaming machines, commonly called pokies, are in use at licensed pubs, clubs, hotels and casinos in Darwin and Alice Springs. 

You have to pay fees to install and licence gaming machines and levies must be paid for the installation of additional gaming machines at venues.

Cap on number of machines in the NT

There is a limit on how many gaming machines are allowed to operate in pubs and clubs in the NT.  A maximum total of 1852 gaming machines can  be licensed in the NT. Gaming machines in the Territory's two casinos are outside the cap limit and not included in the total.

Only venues with relevant liquor licences can have gaming machines and there's a specific number of machines allowed for each venue. 

Hotels and taverns 

Up to 20 gaming machines are allowed in hotels and taverns. 


Up to 55 machines are allowed in clubs.
