Submit a meter reading for a water extraction licence
As part of your responsibilities as a licence holder in the Northern Territory, you must submit water meter readings.
Meter readings are important to help understand:
- how much licensed water has been used
- how much water is still available
- the impact of water use on the overall resource.
How often to submit meter readings
Your water extraction licence tells you when your meter readings are due.
Most readings are due within 14 days of the end of each month.
If you don’t submit meter readings, you will be in breach of your licence and may receive a fine.
If you’re unsure, contact us to confirm your reporting dates.
Example
A January meter reading is due before 14 February.
If you haven’t taken any water this month
You must submit your water use even if it hasn’t changed for the month.
You must provide an update if:
- you aren’t using your bore and you don’t have a meter installed yet
- your licence is for a development that has not started.
How to submit meter readings

To submit your meter reading, you can:
- call or email the Water Licensing and Regulation team or
- use the online web-based portal, My Meter app
- you can access this through the link on your monthly email reminder
- watch the demonstration video below.
Using the My Meter app
You can use the app to:
- submit your water meter reading
- view water use history:
- your monthly and yearly usage
- pumpage for your region.

If you don’t submit
Failing to submit a meter reading means you are in breach of your licence conditions and it's an offence.
If you don’t submit a meter reading, you'll receive a warning letter to tell you that you're in breach of your licence conditions.
If you repeatedly breach it, you may get a fine:
- individual - 5 penalty units
- body corporate - 10 penalty units.
To find out how much a penalty unit is, go to the Department of the Attorney-General and Justice website.
If you think you received a warning letter or fine in error, contact the Water Licensing and Regulation team as soon as possible.
