Conveyance subsidy scheme

You may be able to access financial help with the cost of daily travel for your child to their nearest school or tertiary education facility if they are disadvantaged by the distance of travel.

Conditions of the scheme

A subsidy of $0.45 cents per kilometre in 2015 (subject to CPI adjustment each year) is payable for the use of the private vehicle or vessel used to transport your child.

The subsidy is based on the usage of vehicles rather than the number of students.

The maximum total distance payable is 200km per day. Any variation will be at the discretion of the Chief Executive, Department of Education.

Who can apply

To be eligible you must comply with all of the following:

  • your child must live more than 5km from the nearest school or nearest tertiary institution where appropriate tuition courses are available in the grade or year of schooling in which the student is qualified to enrol and live more than 5km from the nearest point of access to public transport
  • your child must be a permanent resident of the Northern Territory (NT), attend an NT primary, middle or senior school, or be undertaking full-time study in an approved course at a NT tertiary institution or receive necessary special education in the NT.
  • payment of the subsidy to students receiving special education is subject to approval by the Executive Director School Support Services.
  • your child must make a minimum of four single trips (or two return trips) per day:
    • home to school (drop off your child), you return home
    • home to school (collect your child) and you and your child returns home.
    • the journey must be undertaken for the sole purpose of transporting your child to and from school.

If you take your child to school on the way to your place of employment, or other activity, you will not be considered eligible to make a claim.
