Paying your rent in public housing

Rent for houses in remote communities

If you live in a public housing home in a remote community, the following applies:

  • rent is $70 per bedroom per week
  • houses with more than 4 bedrooms are capped at $280 per week.

The person/s on the tenancy agreement, including a house boss or co boss is responsible for:

  • collecting the rent from all adults who live in the house
  • making sure rent is paid on time.

To find out more about remote rent, go to the Department of Territory Families, Housing and Communities (TFHC) website.

Rental stress

Rental stress happens when the rent is more than 25% of the total assessable household income.

To help make sure tenants don't experience rental stress, we've developed a rental safety net policy.

Read more about rental stress and the rental safety net on the TFHC website.
