Howard Springs Hunting Reserve
The Howard Springs Hunting Reserve protects a large part of the Howard River and has virgin areas of rainforest, stringybark, woollybutt and ironwood trees.
A variety of birdlife can be seen all year round, including whistling duck, brolga, rainbow pita and orange-footed scrubfowl.
During waterfowl hunting season approved species of duck, including magpie geese may be hunted with a permit.
Fishing can be very successful at the river.
There are saltwater crocodiles in all waterways in Howard Springs Hunting Reserve. Do not swim and Be Crocwise at all times.

You can access the reserve from Gunn Point Road shortly after crossing the Howard River, or from the north of the Howard Springs Nature Park.
Four-wheel drive access only.
Hunting permits are needed for the reserve.
You should follow all hunting rules.
Lead shot is not permitted.
You can do all of the following activities at Howard Springs Hunting Reserve:
- hunting
- four-wheel driving (4WD)
- wildlife watching
- fishing.
When visiting the park remember all of the following:
- visitors to the NT require a parks pass
- put your rubbish in the bin or take it away with you
- stay on marked roads and tracks
- all cultural items and wildlife are protected
- pets are only permitted on the Reserve under a valid Waterfowl Hunting permit
- nets and traps are not permitted
- take care with fire and light fires only in fireplaces provided
- follow fishing laws
- check that your vehicle is not transporting pests like weeds and cane toads
- camping is not permitted
- you need a permit to use a drone - you must get it before you arrive.
You can have a safe and comfortable trip to Howard Springs Hunting Reserve by doing all of the following:
- observe all park safety signs
- carry and drink plenty of water
- wear a shady hat, sunscreen and insect repellent
- protect yourself from tropical disease
- wear suitable clothing and footwear
- avoid strenuous activity during the heat of the day
- beware of theft, lock vehicles and secure valuables.
