VET in school

Secondary students the Northern Territory (NT) can try an occupation while at school through vocational education and training (VET).

VET in school options include VET for secondary students (VETfSS) programs and school-based apprenticeships and traineeships (SBAT).

VET for secondary students (VETfSS)

Students can enrol in VETfSS from year 9 and select qualifications offered through registered training organisations (RTOs) while at school.

VETfSS is unique because:

  • completion provides credit towards a recognised VET qualification within the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF)
  • it is undertaken as part of the Northern Territory Certificate of Education and Training (NTCET) or contributes towards a student's Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR)
  • the student is enrolled in a school.

To find VETfSS programs in your region, go to the Department of Education and Training website.

School-based apprenticeships and traineeships (SBAT)

Students who are interested in learning workplace skills may consider doing a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship.

SBAT allows students to learn hands-on and theory-based workplace skills and get a nationally accredited qualification.

It combines:

  • paid work
  • VET
  • school studies or the NTCET.

School-based apprentices or trainees are employed by a business and will be paid a wage.

Eligibility

Students must:

  • be at least 15 years old
  • be able to attend at least 48 days per year of paid work from the start date
  • get evidence of endorsement for a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship from their principal.

The employer, school, student and parent must arrange set days per week for the student to attend their apprenticeship or traineeship.
