Food safety programs
Food safety programs show how a business manages the food safety hazards in their food handling activities.
These programs comply with standard 3.2.1 of the food standards code.
What to include
A food safety program must include:
- a list of food safety hazards associated with the food handling activities
- a list of controls used to manage the identified hazards
- a system to regularly monitor food safety controls
- a system for documenting any corrective actions
- regular review of the food safety program
- records to demonstrate compliance with the program.
Who it applies to
The following food businesses must have a food safety program:
- aged care
- hospitals
- child care.

How to develop a food safety program
To develop a food safety program:
- get the NT food safety program template DOCX (312.9 KB)
- use the tool for developing a food safety program for instructions to complete the template:
You can engage a food safety auditor or external contractor if you need assistance.
If you use other templates, it must meet the requirements in standard 3.2.1 of the food standards code.
