Energy Bill Relief - households
The Australian and Northern Territory (NT) governments are coordinating to deliver the Commonwealth's energy bill relief extension.
If eligible, households can get energy bill relief of up to $300 for 2024-25.
If you are a small business, check if you are eligible for electricity relief.
Check if you are an eligible household
To be eligible, you must be the person named on your household electricity, and one of the following:
- receive an electricity bill
- living in an eligible remote community
- eligible communities are those that are Indigenous Essential Services (IES) customers
- living in a household with a prepaid electricity meter
- receive electricity through an alternative energy source.
The Energy Bill Relief is different to the NT Concession Scheme electricity concession .
You can only apply once per household.
Check what group applies to you
Bill relief will be applied depending on how you meet eligibility.
That will determine what, if anything, you need to do to access energy bill relief and when you can expect it.
Group 1
This group applies if you are:
- a named active electricity account holder for your household or
- living in an eligible remote community.
For this group, you don’t need to do anything. Your bill relief will be processed throughout 2024-25 by your energy retailer for:
- customers who receive a bill
- IES remote community households that either have a prepaid Secure meter or E-meter. The $300 credit will be uploaded directly to the meter.
- IES remote community households that have a prepaid AMPY paper token meter. NT government staff will upload the $300 credit to the meter when they visit the community.
When you can expect bill relief
For customers who receive a regular electricity bill, the following applies:
- a $300 credit
- bill relief will be given quarterly if you have an active account on these dates:
- quarter 1 - 31 July 2024
- quarter 2 - 1 October 2024
- quarter 3 - 1 January 2025
- quarter 4 - 1 April 2025
- new customers after 1 April 2025 won't be eligible to receive the bill relief.
Your energy provider will calculate this for you and apply the appropriate credit to your bills.
For customers who have a prepaid electricity meter with Jacana, your energy retailer will apply 2 instalments of $150 bill relief.
For customers living in IES remote community households, you will receive a once-off instalment of $300 applied directly to your meter.
When you receive this will depend where you live. Call 1800 296 900 for more information on your community.
Group 2
You are in group 2 if your household receives electricity by alternative energy sources such as you:
- are not connected to the grid
- incur costs associated with the supply of electricity
- reside in a caravan park where electricity is supplied by the park
- can provide evidence of expenditure such as dated fuel or van park receipts
- have evidence of use of a deep cycle battery.
Alternative energy or embedded network
If you receive energy through an alternative energy source or reside in an embedded network such as a caravan park, you will need to contact the NT Energy Bill Relief team before 31 March 2025.
To receive the once off payment of $300, you must:
- be the person financially responsible for electricity costs at your home
- provide bank details to deposit the energy bill relief into your bank account
- submit evidence of your electricity use and proof of payment from 1 July 2024, including:
- A tax compliant invoice, stating the principal place of residence where the electricity is consumed and
- A receipt or bank statement showing payment by the applicant for the electricity supply.
