Services at Katherine Hospital

Emergency department 

If your problem is non-urgent you should go to your general practitioner (GP), otherwise you will only be seen after all emergencies so you may have to wait. 

Maternity ward

Katherine maternity ward has 14 beds and three birthing rooms and provides maternity care for medium and low risk pregnancies.

Antenatal clinic

Antenatal clinics are held at the hospital every Wednesday at the Community Health Centre in the Government Centre Building in First Street. To book an appointment call (08) 8973 9389.

Childbirth preparation classes

Childbirth education classes are held regularly. 

You can attend early-bird classes from eight to 12 weeks in your pregnancy, followed by four classes from 30 weeks. Call (08) 8973 9257 to book.

General medical and surgical ward

The Jack Roney Ward is a mixed adult ward with 28 beds.

It can cater for patients with acute and chronic conditions. There are four single rooms for patients who need isolation and also a room with three monitored beds. 

There is one renal dialysis chair in the ward.

Children's ward

The children's ward is an 18-bed facility that offers inpatient care for infants, children and adolescents. 

One parent is encouraged to stay in the hospital with their child. 

Children have games, books, television and videos, outdoor play equipment and a fenced play area.

Radiology department

Emergency x-rays can be done at any hour. 

You can have ultrasounds done at the hospital and are able to have a CT scan in Katherine.

You may need to travel to Darwin for certain specialised x-rays and ultrasounds.

The opening hours are from Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 4pm.

Pathology laboratory

Pathology laboratory departments include all of the following:

  • microbiology
  • biochemistry
  • haematology
  • immunology
  • transfusion.

The hospital doesn't have an outpatient blood or specimen collection service.

Opening hours for the pathology laboratory are from Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 4.21pm. Weekends and public holidays from 8am to 12pm.
