Disability awards and scholarships

Employees and volunteers in disability services can apply for the following awards and scholarships in the Northern Territory (NT).

NT Disability Services Awards

The NT Disability Services Awards are held every year in November to celebrate the achievements made in improving the lives of people with disability in the NT.

The awards are open to all NT disability sector employees and volunteers, as well as businesses that provide disability services in the NT.

Award categories

The 2016 awards will be presented in the following categories:

  • emerging leader
  • excellence in improving learning and development
  • excellence in promoting community awareness
  • excellence in improving participation
  • excellence in innovation
  • outstanding disability service employee
  • outstanding business and community initiative.

NT Disability Scholarships Program

The NT Disability Scholarship Program offers opportunities for employees working in the disability service sector to build their skills and career opportunities.

Five scholarships worth up to $3000 each are awarded every year.

Scholarship funds are to be put towards tuition, resources and reasonable study costs.

Before you apply

Eligibility

All disability service employees in the NT who are currently enrolled, or are intending to enrol, in a course that is relevant to disability services are eligible to apply.

You must also fit all of the following:

  • currently work with people with disability
  • have worked in the disability sector for at least one year
  • employed in a disability services focused position in a non-government organisation, local government or front-line government agency
  • must not have won this scholarship in the previous three years
  • committed to finishing your qualification.

What you can use the scholarship for

The scholarship may go towards any of the following:

  • tuition fees
  • textbooks or computer requirements for the course
  • travel toward the course
  • subscription or professional fees
  • conference attendance.

What you can't use the scholarship for

You can't use the scholarship for any of the following:

  • loss of income
  • to buy computer hardware and software
  • accommodation for family members
  • child care
  • fuel.

How to apply

You must fill in the disability scholarships program application form.

You will also need to submit:

  • statement about why you should be awarded a scholarship
  • detailed resume
  • copy of the course or program you want to enrol in
  • copy of my receipt of enrolment.
  • copies of any previous results of all subjects attempted to date
  • proof of citizenship or permanent residency status such as a passport or birth certificate
  • referee report from two peers supporting your application
  • evidence that you work in the disability sector.
