Rules for flying drones in parks

In the Northern Territory, you must follow some rules to fly a drone in permitted parks and reserves.

These rules include:

  • having a permit (if required for drone)
  • do not annoy or create a hazard to park visitors, disturb wildlife or interfere with park management operations
  • follow national flying rules for recreational drones - go to Civil Aviation Safety Authority website
  • always fly your drone in your line-of-sight during daylight hours and don't let it get too far away from you
  • no flying within 200m or over waterholes, campgrounds, and picnic areas (while in use) and staff houses, offices or workshops
  • be more than 30m away from people, animals, vehicles, boats, or buildings in other areas
  • be no higher than 120m (400 ft) above ground level
  • do not create a hazard to other aircraft - at least 5.5km (3 nautical miles) away from an airport, airfield, or helicopter landing site
  • have people’s consent if you record or photograph them (or wait until they go)
  • do not fly over or near an area during emergency operations including accidents, weather events, police operations and search and rescue activities.

You must also stop flying your drone if Parks and Wildlife staff ask you to. If you fail to stop, you may be issued with a fine.
