Portrait of a Senior Territorian Award

The Portrait of a Senior Territorian Award and exhibition celebrates the contributions of senior Territorians and recognises Territory artists.

The award and exhibition are held annually.

Who can enter

To enter the award, you must be:

  • 17 years or over
  • a Northern Territory (NT) resident.

What you can enter

To apply for this award, you must meet all of the following criteria.

The artwork must be:

  • an original painting completed within the last two years
  • a portrait painted from life, with the subject:
    • known to the artist and
    • aware of the artist’s intention with at least one live sitting
  • no bigger than 1.5m x 1.2m - dimensions include the mounting or framing.

The subject must be a:

  • living senior Territorian aged 60 years or older
  • permanent resident of the NT.

To submit collaborative works, you must include the name of each artist on the entry form.

What you can't enter

You can't enter portraits that you previously submitted to the Portrait of a Senior Territorian Award.

When the award and exhibition will be held

The award and exhibition will be held at the Araluen Art Centre in Alice Springs.

The exhibition opens on 4 December 2020 and closes on 7 March 2021.


Winners of the Acquisition Award category will be announced on 4 December 2020 and selected by a panel of judges.

The first prize winning artwork will go to the Araluen Art Centre and be displayed permanently.

The People’s Choice Award is decided by public votes submitted during the exhibition period.

The winner will be announced on 12 March 2021.

Prize money

Prize money will be awarded as follows:

  • first prize - $7,000
  • second prize - $2,000
  • third prize - $500
  • people's choice - $1,000.
