Portrait of a Senior Territorian Award

The Portrait of a Senior Territorian Art Award and exhibition celebrates the achievements of senior Territorians in our community.

2021 award winners

This year there were 37 finalists from across the Territory.

1st prize - $7,000

Artist: Thomas Higgs
Portrait of Garlil Jane Christophersen - Matriarch and Pioneer, Garlil.

The work will be acquired by the Northern Territory Government.

2nd prize - $2,000

Artist: Jose Victor Patalinghug
Portrait of Adrian 'Wildhorse' Lantjin - Wildhorse.

3rd prize - $500

Artist: Dr Al Strangeways
Portrait of Dr Patricia Miller AO - Morning Sun at Olive Pink Botanical Gardens.

Highly commended

Artist: Catherine Miles
Portrait of Iris Patricia Raye - A Raye of Sunshine.

People’s Choice Award

Artist: Katalin Horompo
Portrait of Dr Hugh Heggie - Storytime: Dr Hugh Heggie.

Entry requirements

Entrants were required to meet the following criteria:

  • an original artwork completed with the last two years
  • the artwork is no larger than 1.5m x 1.5m including the mounting or framing
  • a portrait painted from life with the subject being:
    • a senior Territorian aged 60 years or older
    • a permanent resident of the NT
    • known to the artist
    • aware of the artist's intention
    • at least one live sitting.
