Authorised mining sites
Regulation of mining activities - under review
Environmental regulation of mining activities in the Northern Territory has changed.
From 1 July 2024, activities will be regulated under the Environment Protection Act (EP) 2019.
Transitional arrangements apply for activities that were authorised under the Mining Management Act 2001.

This page is being updated to reflect the new regulatory framework.
An authorised mining site is a project that is operating in the Northern Territory (NT).
From 1 July 2024, projects authorised under the Mining Management Act (MMA) 2001 are automatically deemed to hold an environmental (mining) licence under the EP Act 2019. This is called a deemed licence.
A deemed licence is made up of:
- an existing authorisation
- mining management plan (MMP) approved under the MMA.
For a project to be authorised and operating, a mining company has:
- secured an approved mining management plan
- paid a mining security
- authorisation to operate.
Once a mining security has been paid, and a notice of authority to start or continue the mining activity is issued, it will be published on the public register.
