Liquor registrations
If you plan to sell wholesale liquor, serve free alcohol with a business or community group, or allow customers to BYO, you need to register.
You can:
- register or renew as a liquor wholesaler
- register to serve BYO alcohol at a business
- register to serve complimentary alcoholic drinks at a business
- register to serve alcohol at small community groups.
Before you register
Check the registration form for the types of documents you will need.
Some registrations are free while others include a fee, read more about fees, processing times and how to submit your registration.
You can register for 1, 3 or 5 years. If you want to renew, you must do this before your current registration expires.

By registering as a BYO server of liquor, your customers can bring and drink their own alcohol at your venue, while consuming food purchased from you.
You can register for 3 years and can re-register as needed.
You do not need to register if your business already has a liquor licence.

You must register as a complimentary server of liquor to serve free alcoholic drinks to customers.
This is for businesses who:
- do not have a liquor licence, and
- selling food or drinks is not part of the main business.
It allows you to serve no more than 2 complimentary standard drinks to a customer in a day.
Registrations are for one, 5 or 10 years and you can re-register as needed.

If you run a small community group of 100 members or less and want to serve alcohol to members, you must register.
Registering allows you to serve drinks for up to 4 hours per week if:
- you don't have a liquor licence
- the person serving has a responsible service of alcohol (RSA) certificate
- it's served at the premises nominated on the registration
- the main purpose of your small community group is to run an activity, not to drink alcohol.
For example, it will allow your group to serve drinks:
- after training or games to team members
- to members at practice
- to the workplace as part of a social club.
