Food safety standards

If you own a Northern Territory (NT) food business you must take a preventative approach to reducing food-borne illnesses.

Food safety standards help businesses produce food that is safe to eat.

NT food businesses must be registered and follow national food safety standards.

These standards set down the rules for all of the following:

  • food handling
  • transport and storage
  • maintaining premises and equipment

Read the law

Why food safety is important

Food safety is important because it helps you to:

  • obey the law
  • reduce the risk of making people sick
  • provide a safe working environment for your employees
  • protect your reputation.

For more information about food safety go to the Food Standards Australia New Zealand website or contact Environmental Health.

Charitable events

You usually do not have to register as a food business to sell food at a fundraising event such as a sausage sizzle or school fete.
