Moving livestock within the NT
NT regulation update: agriculture and livestock changes
From 22 May 2025, the Agriculture Legislation Amendment Regulations 2025 came into place, amending:
- Hemp Industry Regulations 2020
- Livestock Regulations 2009
- Pastoral Land Regulations 1992
- Plant Health Regulations 2011.

When moving livestock within the Northern Territory (NT), the following requirements apply.

In this table, n/a stands for not applicable.
Horses and all equine, includes miniature horses, ponies, mules, donkey.
Pigs includes wild pigs.
Poultry includes domestic fowl and is not limited to chickens, ducks, geese, guinea fowl, peafowl, quail, turkeys.

What you must do
For the livestock marked in the the table above, you must:
- have an NT property identification code (PIC) for the property of origin and the destination property
- complete an NT waybill for the consignment of livestock
- have a registered brand on cattle more than 8 months old
- have an approved National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) device on each animal being moved
- abide by the livestock welfare and land transport standards
- have your livestock inspected and treated for cattle ticks if they are moving from either
- the tick-infected zone to a control or tick-free zone
- or the Parkhurst tick-infected zoned to the infected, control or free zone
- get a Parks and Wildlife NT permit to keep or permit to import or export. For more information, call 08 899 4814 or email pwpermits@nt.gov.au.
PIC requirement
If you keep livestock on your block or in your backyard, you must have a property identification code (PIC), even for one or livestock kept on agistment.
It's the law. You could be fined if you don't have a PIC.
