Water licence and notice portals

Northern Territory (NT) water extraction licence application notices and decisions are published on the following portals.

Water notices portal

Go to the water notices portal to find:

  • water licence applications that are open for public comment
  • recent water licence decisions.

Water licensing portal

Go to the water licensing portal to find:

  • decisions for all water extraction licence applications in the NT
  • information about current and pending licences
  • information about how water is extracted and used
  • spatial and dashboard analytics
  • technical and scientific documents.

Terms used in the portals

You'll see the below terms in the portal:

  • Advertised – a water licence application has been received, advertised publicly and a decision is yet to be made.
  • Granted – a water licence has been approved by the controller of water resources.
  • Declined – a water licence has been declined by the controller.
  • Notice of intention (NOI) – the controller must provide a NOI to make a water extraction licence decision.
    • This notice is published in the manner considered appropriate by the controller, usually on the water notices portal.
    • This notice and associated documents include information about  the application, such as the where the water will be extracted from, what it will be used for and how much is being applied for.
  • Notice of decision (NOD) – after a decision about a water extraction licence application is made, the controller must give notice of the decision.
    • This notice must give a brief statement of the reasons for the decision, where the full decision can be found and how to appeal.
    • This notice will be published in the same way the NOI was published.
    • It will also be published on the water notices portal for 30 days, and permanently on the water licensing portal.
  • Statement of decision (SOD) or water extraction licence decision (WELD) – given by the controller when they make a licence decision. It explains all the relevant factors taken into account when the decision was made. These factors include:
    • the availability of water
    • if any water allocation plan applies
    • any adverse effects created by the activity
    • the quantity of water
    • the beneficial use
    • any other factors the controller considers relevant.
