Disability concessions and subsidies

There are four categories of concessions and subsidies available to people with a disability or their carers who live in the Northern Territory (NT).

These include all of the following:

Pensions, allowances and support

Gardening support

People with disability living in the NT may be eligible for gardening support.

This work is usually provided by NT Corrections staff and prisoners.

Disability support pension

The disability support pension is a Centrelink payment for people who are permanently blind, or have a physical, intellectual or psychiatric condition that stops them from working.

Mobility Allowance

People with disability who cannot use public transport or participate in approved activities without substantial support may qualify for a Mobility Allowance.

Centrelink Pensioner Concession Card

The Pensioner Concession Card may entitle cardholders to all of the following:

  • reduced-cost medicines under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme
  • bulk billing for doctor’s appointments
  • refunds for medical expenses through the Medicare Safety Net
  • assistance with hearing services through the Office of Hearing Services
  • discounted Australia Post mail redirection.

Pharmaceutical Allowance

People who receive income support may be eligible for the Pharmaceutical Allowance for assistance with the cost of buying prescription medicines.
