Heritage Register: nominate a place or object

You can nominate a place or object to the Northern Territory (NT) Heritage Register.

You can also search for places or objects in the register.

Before you nominate

Before you apply, you must have copies of the following documents:

  • maps
  • plans
  • photographs
  • historical information.

How to nominate

To nominate a place or object to the NT Heritage Register, you must follow these steps:

Step 1. Fill in the nomination form:

Step 2. Submit your form and documents by emailing heritagecouncil@nt.gov.au or by mail to:

How your nomination will be assessed

Your nomination will be assessed by the NT Heritage Council.

The Heritage Council is authorised under the Heritage Act to manage the nomination process. Read the Heritage Act 2011.

The Heritage Council assesses all of the following:

  • if it is important to the Territory's cultural or natural history
  • if it possesses uncommon, rare or endangered aspects of the Territory's cultural or natural history
  • if it has potential to add information that will contribute to an understanding of the Territory's cultural or natural history
  • if it demonstrates the key characteristics of a class of cultural or natural places or environments
  • if it is important in showing aesthetic characteristics
  • if it demonstrates high creative or technical achievement during a particular period
  • if it has a strong or special association with a community or cultural group for social, cultural or spiritual reasons
  • if it has significance of a place to Aboriginal people as part of their continuing and developing cultural traditions.

You can submit comments on a proposal by emailing or mailing the NT Heritage Council by the due date.
