Fencing and boundary disputes

Fencing and boundary disputes are common disagreements between neighbours.

In the Northern Territory (NT) rules about fencing are set out in the Northern Territory Fences Act 1972.

You need to understand your rights and responsibilities over the following:

• existing fencing
• how to establish your legal boundary line
• sharing the cost of building and maintaining fencing between properties.
