Energy efficiency of residential buildings

If you build or modify a home in the Northern Territory and a building permit is needed, certain energy efficiency standards apply.

As outlined in the National Construction Code (NCC), this means you must meet an energy star rating or follow elemental provisions.

These standards help:

  • make homes more comfortable to live in
  • provide savings on energy bills over a home's lifetime
  • reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Read more below or for more information, go to the NCC website.

Energy star rating

All new:

  • houses must achieve at least a 5 energy star rating
  • apartments must achieve at least a 3.5 energy star rating.

Elemental provisions

All new houses and apartments must meet the requirements for:

  • roofs, walls and floors
  • the glazing allowances
  • air movement requirements.
