Short walks in Litchfield National Park

There are several short, well-signposted walks in Litchfield National Park that pass through a range of landscapes that are typical of the Top End.

Each walk is graded based on the walking track grading system.

Before you walk, read about bushwalking and hiking safety.

Shady Creek and Florence Falls

Distance 1km one way
Time 30 minutes
GradeGrade 3 - moderate

Start at Florence Falls picnic area or the plunge pool.

This beautiful walk along Shady Creek is an alternative to the main track to the plunge pool. It has 160 stairs. Along the way is monsoon forest and open woodland.

Florence Creek

Distance 3.2km
Time 1.5 hours
GradeGrade 2 - easy

Start at the upstream picnic area or Buley Rockhole.

This walk follows Florence Creek between Florence Falls and Buley Rockhole.

Park your vehicle in one of the car parks at Florence Falls as parking is limited at Buley.

Tolmer Falls

Distance 1.6km return
Time 45 minutes
GradeGrade 3 - moderate

Start at Tolmer Falls Lookout.

This is a pleasant alternative route back to the car park from the lookout. It takes you through typical Top End sandstone country and along Tolmer Creek.

Swimming is not allowed.

Wangi Falls

Time 1 hour
GradeGrade 3 - moderate, steep in sections

Start at Wangi plunge pool.

The walk takes you to a viewing platform at the base of the falls, through a monsoon forest and up stairs to the escarpment.

Swimming is not allowed above the falls.

Greenant Creek

Time 1.5 hours
GradeGrade 3 - moderate, steep in sections

Start at the bridge across Greenant Creek.

This shady walk follows the creek upstream, climbs steeply up to Tjaetaba Falls Lookout then up to a tiny pool above the falls where you can swim.

The plunge pool and the area downstream of the falls is a sacred site, so you should not swim there.

Rocky Falls day use area

Start at the carpark and walk along the creek.

Enjoy a refreshing swim in the creek, 600 metres along the track.

Walker Creek track

This walk provides access to the Tabletop Track and to campsites along Walker Creek.

Respect the privacy of other campers along the way.

Tjaynera (Sandy Creek)

Start at the car park. The track winds along the creek and passes a hillside full of cycad palms before reaching a plunge pool.

You can swim in the pool.

Lower Cascades

Time 1.5 hours
GradeGrade 4 - moderate to difficult

Start at the car park. The quickest way to Cascades Creek is by this shady walk.

This walk is closed in the Wet Season due to flooding and an increased risk of crocodiles.

Upper Cascades

Distance 3.3km loop in the Dry Season
3.6km return in the Wet Season
Time 2 hours
GradeGrade 4 - moderate to difficult

Start at the car park. This walk takes you up onto the Tabletop Plateau where several lookouts have sweeping views of the lowlands below.

The walk is exposed and can be hot, so take water with you.
