Cutting red tape for Territory businesses and community organisations

Legislation changes will make it easier for real estate agents’ representatives and incorporated associations to do business in the Northern Territory, reducing red tape and increasing efficiencies for a range of occupational licences and processes.

Changes include:

Real Estate Agents’ Representatives (agents) changes

Introduction of 3 and 5-year registration options for agents to remove the admin burden of annual renewals and new applications and allowing for a discount of approximately 10% on fees for longer periods.

Changes will also provide continuity of registration for several occupations so licensees can keep delivering important services for the Territory with certainty while their renewal applications are being processed.

Incorporated Associations changes

Lifting the associations tier levels will reduce the administrative burden relating to auditing requirements for smaller associations while ensuring accountability for the financial activities of associations.

Changes will deliver greater flexibility, enabling smaller associations to have their financial statements audited by an independent person rather than having to engage a professional accountant to meet compliance requirements.

Modernisation of legislation

Updates have been made to terminology throughout occupational licencing and associations legislation to provide for electronic communication and streamlined processes.

The changes also provide continuity of licence and registration terms for a number of licensed occupations, allowing licensees the ability to continue to work after lodging a renewal application.

These changes are set to benefit real estate agents, pawn brokers and second-hand dealers, plumbers and drainers, security officers, and tobacco retailers.

The Department of Trade, Business and Asian Relations will notify associations and occupational licensees once the amendments come into effect.
