Anzac Day 2024

Anzac Day 2024 memorials dates and places.

On the morning of 25 April 1915, the Anzacs set out to capture the Gallipoli peninsula in order to open the Dardanelles to the allied forces. The objective was to capture Constantinople – now Istanbul in Turkey.

On that day, 16,000 Australian and New Zealand troops landed at what became known as Anzac Cove as part of a campaign to capture the Gallipoli Peninsula.

The Anzacs landed on Gallipoli and met fierce resistance from the Turkish defenders. The campaign continued for 8 months and at the end of 1915 the allied forces were evacuated.

Of the 60,000 Australians who fought at Gallipoli during the campaign, there were 26,000 casualties and over 8,000 personnel had lost their lives. Later battles like the one at Lone Pine would see the Australians suffer terrible losses. The Turkish also suffered many casualties and by the end of the campaign their dead would number more than 85,000.

The 25th of April soon became the day on which Australians and New Zealanders remembered the sacrifice of those who lost their lives in that war.

Today, the meaning of Anzac Day includes the remembrance of all Australians and New Zealanders who have served and continue to serve in the military and sacrifice that they and their families have made.

The Northern Territory Government supports programs and activities to increase community awareness and understanding of Anzac Day and to also commemorate the service of all Australian and New Zealand Defence Force personnel.

A program of commemoration events will be held across the Northern Territory on 25 April 2024.
