Teacher misconduct

Teacher misconduct are actions or behaviours by educators that violate:

  • professional standards
  • codes of conduct
  • legal obligations.

Teacher registration board (TRB)

The TRB facilitates the safety, quality and competence of the teaching profession in the Northern Territory (NT) for all government and non-government schools.

To teach in the NT, teachers must be registered with the board.

Find out more on the TRB website.

Making a complaint about teacher conduct

The TRB manages complaints about teachers if it can't be resolved by the school.

The school and other authorities will also refer teachers to the board if a complaint of a serious nature is made against them.

Example of misconduct can include:

  • unethical behaviour
  • failing to provide adequate supervision
  • fraudulent activities - misusing school resources, funds or equipment for personal gain
  • failing to report incidents of student harm, misconduct or breaches of child protection policies to appropriate authorities
  • engaging in criminal activities - theft, fraud, drug offenses or any other illegal behaviour.

Make a complaint about a teacher misconduct on the TRB website.

Harm or abuse against a child

You must report your concerns to the police if you believe a child is being, or has been, harmed or abused.
