BDR identification system
If you have a liquor licence with a takeaway or grocery store authority, you must use and maintain an identification system, also known as a Banned Drinker Register (BDR) scanner.
Get an identification system
Currently, takeaway and grocery store authorities can only be obtained through a transfer of licence. This means the premises should already have a scanner.
To request a replacement scanner, call the BDR scanner technical helpdesk on 1800 786 099.
Using the system
The scanner must be used for all purchases where a customer is buying takeaway alcohol.
Before the sale can go ahead, an approved form of ID must be scanned and a ‘SALE’ result shown.
The sale can't proceed if a red ‘NO SALE’ banner is shown.
Technical issues
If the scanner has lost connection, it will display a yellow banner when an ID is scanned. If this happens, you must continue to scan ID’s for all purchases and follow the steps below to report the issue.
If the scanner is not working at all, you can still sell alcohol if you physically check an approved form of ID before processing a sale. You must also follow the steps below to report the issue.
Report your technical issue
Step 1. Call the 24/7 BDR scanner technical helpdesk on 1800 786 099
