Christmas and New Year trading

Changes to the NT Liquor Act

On 1 October 2019, liquor laws changed in the Northern Territory (NT).

Find out about changes to the NT liquor laws.

Licensed premises in the Northern Territory (NT) must follow liquor licence conditions for public holiday trading.

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day

The sale of liquor on Christmas Day is prohibited for most licensees.

Licensed premises that are not able to trade on Christmas Day can sell liquor on Christmas Eve during their normal hours of trade for that day. They don't have to close at midnight.

New Year's Eve

Licensees that want to extend their hours of trade on New Year’s Eve must contact Licensing NT to discuss the options available.
