A minor flood warning is issued when the Katherine River level is likely to go over 3m at the Nitmiluk Centre and 16m at Katherine Bridge.

When this happens:

  • Gorge Road at Maud Creek will be closed
  • residents should listen to the Katherine Controller and Secure NT for further advice.
No two flood events are the same, so the actual extent of flooding can differ greatly from one location to another.

Moderate flood warning

A moderate flood warning is issued when the Katherine River level is likely to go over 5.5m at the Nitmiluk Centre and 16.5m at the Katherine Bridge.

When this happens:

  • Gorge Road will be closed
  • parts of the rural area may experience flooding
  • residents should listen to the Katherine Controller and Secure NT for further advice.

Major flood warning

A major flood warning is issued when the Katherine River level is over 6.5m at the Nitmiluk Centre and is likely to go over 17.5m at the Katherine Bridge.

When this happens:

  • flooding may occur:
    • in the CBD
    • in lower residential areas
    • at Katherine Hospital.
  • the Stuart Highway may be cut
  • public shelters are expected to be open
  • residents should listen to the Katherine Controller and Secure NT for further advice.
