Catching a bus in a rural area

If you live in a rural area, you might need to use an informal bus stop to catch a public or school bus.

Informal bus stops operate across the Northern Territory (NT).

They are not official or signposted. They are used to pick up and drop off passengers who live far from a regular bus stop.

You can choose any location along rural public or school bus routes to catch a bus, if it is safe.

Choose a suitable location

The location of informal bus stops are generally agreed between bus operators and passengers.

You can help decide where informal bus stops should be located.

Guidelines have been developed to help you identify a suitable bus stop location that is safe for:

  • children waiting to get on and off the bus
  • bus drivers and other passengers
  • passing traffic.

If you're not sure about the safety of a bus stop location, you can ask for a safety check of the area.
