Become an Aboriginal interpreter

To become an interpreter in the Northern Territory, you must be both:

  • fluent in an Aboriginal language and in English
  • interested in being employed by the government.

How to apply

To apply, follow these steps:

Step 1. Fill in an application to register as an interpreter.

Step 2. Email your form to ais@nt.gov.au.

After you apply

The Aboriginal Interpreter Service (AIS) will call you to arrange an interview.

After your interview, you will be asked to do a language test. This test will help the AIS understand if you're ready to become an interpreter.

If you pass your test, you will be given training to become an approved AIS interpreter.
