National construction code
Construction in the Northern Territory must meet National Construction Code 2022 (NCC).
The code is developed by the Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB).
Response to NCC 2025
In October 2025, building ministers agreed on the content of the next edition of the National Construction Code, to be known as NCC 2025.
Each state and territory of Australia may adopt NCC 2025 in its entirely, partially or not at all.
The construction industry is under considerable pressure from a range of challenges. The NT Government is of the view that further complexity in changes to the code will add unnecessary pressure.
For this reason, the NCC 2025 will not apply in the Territory from 1 May 2026. The Minister for Lands, Planning and Environment declared this under the Building Act 1993 through Government Gazette S31 on 29 April 2026.
This means the Territory keeps NCC 2022 and existing variations.
