Centenary of Katherine limited edition number plates

On 2 February 2026, the Motor Vehicle Registry (MVR) will release a limited edition number plate series to mark the 100-year anniversary of the official gazetting of Katherine as a township of the Northern Territory in 1926.

The series is called ‘NT Centenary of Katherine 1926-2026’.

Fee

The plates cost $300, the same as a personalised number plate.

Availability

From 2 February 2026 to 31 December 2026, 100 limited edition number plates will be available to purchase.

Who can purchase

You can only purchase the number plates if you are an NT resident with a current NT vehicle registered in your name.

Where to purchase

You can purchase the plates in person at any MVR office in the NT on a first come, first served basis.

They are not available to purchase online, by phone or email.

Before you purchase

  • You can't purchase the plates as a souvenir.
  • The number plates can't be used for:
    • motorcycles
    • trailers
    • commercial vehicles, likes taxis and buses
    • other non-general issue plate type vehicles, like plant and club-registered vehicles.
  • You will need to remove your existing number plates so you can immediately fit your new plates to your car.
  • Number plates are the property of the MVR office. You are paying the fee for the right to display them.

If you sell your car

If you intend to keep your commemorative plates for another car, you can apply to the MVR for a plate change before you sell.

You must surrender the number plates to the MVR until they are ready to be used again.

Find out how to transfer the right to display number plates.

Damaged, lost or stolen plates

You must report number plates that are damaged, lost or stolen to the MVR and NT police.

You can then apply to remake the number plate or get a set of general issued number plates by paying the prescribed fees.
