Contraception and pregnancy options

Contraception helps to prevent unintended pregnancies.

Types of contraception

There are different types of contraception, learn more on the Better Health channel website.

You can discuss your options with a GP or Family Planning clinic.

Emergency contraception

Emergency contraception is medication you can take to prevent pregnancy.

You can get it:

  • by purchasing it at a pharmacy without a prescription
  • for free by visiting a clinic 34 or emergency department hospital.

It's best to take the pill as early as possible, or within 72 hours of having sex. This is when it is most effective. The longer you leave it the less effective it can be. Talk to clinic 34 about other methods that can be accessed up to 5 days.

Termination

Early and later stages of termination, also known as abortion, is available in the Northern Territory (NT).
