Mental health issues and illness

A mental illness is a health problem that may significantly affect how you think, behave and interact with other people. It describes a group of illnesses that are diagnosed according to standardised criteria.

Mental health issues, such as distress and stress, also affect how a person thinks, feels, and behaves, but usually are short in duration and may be relieve with support rather than clinical intervention. 

One in five Australians will suffer from a mental illness each year.

Tips for staying mentally healthy

You should do all of the following:

  • talk about your feelings or situations that are worrying you
  • keep in touch with friends and family
  • ask for support or help early
  • eat well
  • get plenty of sleep
  • keep active
  • if you have a drink of alcohol, make sure it is in moderation
  • try to not smoke
  • take a break
  • do things you enjoy
  • accept who you are
  • don't try to think less of yourself, but try to think of yourself less.
