Free Japanese encephalitis vaccine

Japanese encephalitis (JE) is a disease that can be prevented with vaccines.

There is currently a limited supply of JE vaccines in Australia.

Who is eligible

Residents of high-risk areas in the NT are eligible for the free vaccines, including:

• Darwin, Palmerston and rural areas
• Top End and East Arnhem communities including Nhulunbuy and Katherine
• Tennant Creek.

The JE funded vaccine program will be available until the end of October 2024.

Vaccine suitability

In the NT there is a vaccine for:

• adults
• children
• infants from 2 months of age
• anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding
• immunocompromised people.

Make an appointment at a vaccination clinic

You can get the free vaccination if you're an NT resident.

Appointments can be made with a community care centre.

Tennant Creek bookings can be made with the Centre for Disease Control on 08 8962 4259.

Remote communities can contact their local health centre.
