This guide has information about the cancer services offered in the Northern Territory (NT) for people with cancer and their carers through every stage of a person's cancer journey.

Early detection plays an important role in finding cancer at the initial stages to make sure it is treated accordingly.

Prostate checks, breast and cervical cancer screening services are available in the Northern Territory at your local general practitioner or medical clinic.

Diagnosis

Signs and symptoms of cancer are not always easily picked up which is why a visit to your local medical clinic or general practitioner (GP) will help determine a diagnosis. If necessary your GP will refer you to a specialist for further tests.

Diagnostic testing

You will need a referral from your GP for relevant diagnostic testing. Some tests can only be performed at limited locations in the Northern Territory (NT), while others are not performed in the NT at all.

There are five public hospitals in the Northern Territory (NT) and one private hospital located in Darwin. Oncology (cancer) services are provided at three of these hospitals - Royal Darwin, Alice Springs and Darwin Private Hospitals.

The Alan Walker Cancer Care Centre is located within the Royal Darwin Hospital premises.

Treatment for some types of cancers will involve referral to interstate cancer treatment centres as not all can be treated in the NT.

Palliative care is active care that aims to promote comfort when cure is no longer possible. 

If you have a life limiting condition, you may benefit from early referral to palliative care services.

Territory Palliative Care provides specialist palliative services in the Northern Territory. These services can be provided at home (urban, rural and remote), in a hospital or hospice. 

The offices are located in Alice Springs and Darwin and provide services to the surrounding regional areas.

Support services incorporate many services from both government and non-government organisations (NGOs).

The range of support services vary from:

• financial support and counselling.
