Become a junior ranger
The junior ranger program offers children the opportunity to discover the natural and cultural environment through fun and hands-on activities.
The program runs annually in Alice Springs, Katherine and Darwin.
What junior rangers do
Junior rangers:
- explore parks and reserves
- learn outdoor skills
- identify animal tracks
- identify weeds
- find their way using maps
- spotlight for animals
- bird watch
- help conserve the environment
- explore Aboriginal culture.
All activities for junior rangers are free.
Parents are welcome to attend activities with their child.
Who can be a junior ranger
To be a junior ranger, you must:
- be 9 to 12 years old
- have average fitness
- live in Alice Springs, Katherine or Darwin
- haven't been a junior ranger before.
Places in the program are limited.
Junior rangers are chosen by:
- who applied first
- who can commit to all planned activities.
When activities take place
Program schedules vary between locations.
Activities usually take place on a nominated weekday evening and possibly the occasional weekend.
At the start of the program, junior rangers will be told all dates, times and gear needed for each activity.
A commitment to the full program of activities is a requirement of enrolment.
How to apply
The junior ranger program registration has closed for 2022.
It will reopen in 2023.
