Apply to shoot on vacant Crown land
To shoot on vacant Crown land in the Northern Territory (NT), you must apply for a permit.
A permit costs $20 and is valid for 10 years from date of issue.
Permit restrictions
When shooting on vacant Crown land, the following rules apply:
- you're only allowed to shoot in the areas highlighted on the maps below:
- you can't hunt - you’re only allowed to hunt on Parks and Wildlife dedicated hunting reserves.

Who can apply
To apply for a permit to shoot on vacant Crown land, you must be at least 18 years old.

In person
To apply in person, submit the completed application form and pay the $20 permit fee at one of the office locations below.
You can pay the permit fee by cash, cheque, money order or credit card.
You must also show your driver licence or photo ID.

Send the following by mail to the Department of Lands, Planning and Environment:
- your completed application form
- a copy of your driver licence or photo ID
- cheque or money order for the permit fee made payable to the Receiver of Territory Monies (RTM).

Email your completed application form, along with a copy of your driver licence or other photo ID, to bas.files@nt.gov.au.
If your application is approved, you will receive an invoice to pay the permit fee. Once payment is received, your permit will be sent to you by both email and post.
After you apply
If your application is approved, you will receive:
- the permit at the front counter - if you applied in person
- the permit through your postal address - if you applied by mail or online via Territory Services
- an invoice to pay a $20 fee and receive the permit through your postal address - if you applied by email.
