School-age children in jobs
If your child has a job, their work cannot interfere with their learning or school attendance. Parents, carers or employers who breach the law may face fines or other consequences.
It’s important that your child's job supports, rather than disrupts, their education.
Age restrictions for work
Children under 15 can only work in limited roles that are safe and age-appropriate, such as:
- babysitting
- helping in family businesses
- delivering newspapers.
Children aged 15 and over can work in a wider range of roles, if the work is safe, suitable for their age and does not interfere with their education. They can choose school-based apprenticeships and traineeships as a way to balance education and work, while also meeting attendance requirements.

Restricted hours
School-age children are not allowed to work during school hours.
It is also against the law for children under 15 to work between 10pm and 6am.
Quitting school for work
If you have a child who is considering leaving school before completing year 12, you should get advice from your school. Other options should be explored before making a decision.
