Request mediation: privacy statement

The Community Justice Centre (CJC) is a dispute resolution service within the Department of the Attorney-General and Justice.

We handle your information in accordance with the information privacy principles in the Information Act 2002 (NT) and other relevant legislation.

We have a responsibility to protect your personal information and we take reasonable steps to make sure that your personal information is protected from misuse, loss, modification, and unauthorised access or disclosure.

This privacy statement describes the information we collect about you when you submit a request for mediation services to the CJC and explains how personal information is managed and protected. We recommend that you read this statement in conjunction with the privacy policy available on the Northern Territory (NT) Government’s website.

Personal information has the same meaning it is given in the Act.

Information you choose to give us

We will collect personal information that you choose to give us. We will only collect personal information necessary for us to provide a mediation service.

The information we ask you to provide includes:

• your name
• your contact details
• contact details for the person, people or organisation you are in dispute with
• a brief summary of the dispute.

We use this information to open a mediation case and to invite the other participant/s to attend mediation.

What happens if you don't provide the information

You do not have to provide your personal information but if you choose not to, we may not be able to accept your request for mediation services.

Disclosing your personal information

The information you submit in this request for mediation services is confidential and will not be shared with third parties.

Accessing your personal information

You may request access to the personal information we hold about you. We are required to provide access to this information, unless there is a law that requires or authorises us to deny access.

If the information we hold about you is inaccurate, incomplete, or out of date, we will take reasonable steps to correct the information. We will notify you in writing, and explain our reasons if we refuse to give access to, or correct, your personal information.
