About the Public Trustee

The Public Trustee provides estate, trustee, will and will storage services to Northern Territory (NT) residents.

It also manages property that has been restrained or forfeited under the Criminal Property Forfeiture Act 2002.

Who the Public Trustee reports to

If the Public Trustee is appointed by a court order, the Public Trustee may be required to report back to the court on a regular basis.

They are also responsible to the Supreme Court and may need to apply to the court for permission to do certain things.

The Public Trustee has the additional responsibility of reporting to government through the Department of Justice and the Attorney General.

The Public Trustee is also subject to the scrutiny of both internal and external auditors, as well as the Ombudsman, who has the power to investigate all matters and report all adverse findings to Parliament.

The Public Trustee is subject to the Public Trustee Act 1979.
