Australian Business Licence Information Service
The Australian Business Licence Information Service (ABLIS) is a free online tool to help you find out what licences and registrations you may need to operate your business.
The service provides information for local, Territory and Federal legislative requirements, including where you can go to find out more or get help.
For more information go to the Australian Government's Australian Business Licence and Information System (ABLIS) website.
You can also get information packs with licencing and other information specific to the type of business activity you are interested in.
The ABN is a unique 11-digit number used to identify businesses in Australia.
Registering for an ABN is not compulsory for your business, but you will need one to register for the GST.
If you don't, other businesses can withhold 46.5% from any payment to you for tax purposes.
For more information or to apply for an ABN, go to the Australian Government's Business Registration website.
You can get basic information about ABN registered businesses.
Go to the Australian Government's Australian Business Register, ABN Lookup website to check an ABN.
For more information about licences, permits and registrations contact your nearest Territory Business Centre.
